new poem: if you happen to find yourself drowning

if you happen to find yourself drowning

I used to think I was a rock
jutting proud from the ocean
something to lash your rope to
when the water got choppy
something to cling on to
if you happened to find yourself drowning
while floating by

now it has become apparent
I'm more of a barnacle encrusted pile
barely visible above the water
a little rotten, perhaps, ravaged by time
but still able to perform the same function
if you happen to find yourself drowning
while floating by
